Practical Tips
Currency & Payments
- Everything at the resort is priced in USD — you won't need Maldivian Rufiyaa
- All charges go on a room tab and are settled at checkout — cards accepted
- 10% service charge + 16% GST added to all bills (~26% on top of base prices)
- Green Tax: $12 per person per day (children under 2 exempt)
- Keep about $1,000-$1,300 in clean USD notes for discretionary tips, ideally mostly $10s, $20s, and a few $50s
Tipping
- 10% service charge is already built into resort bills, so extra tipping is discretionary and should reflect standout personal service, not the total holiday cost
- Thakuru: plan $500 total for this stay, given in an envelope on the final full day or at checkout
- Kids Club team: plan $250-$350 total, ideally split across the main carers who looked after the three kids most often (for example $75-$100 each to 3-4 standout staff)
- Standout restaurant staff: plan $150-$250 total across the waiters who really made the trip, roughly $20-$40 each depending on how many you want to recognise
- Housekeeping: if not already tipped along the way, plan $80-$160 total for the villa team (about $5-$10 per day)
- Buggy drivers, bell staff, and transfer helpers: optional $2-$5 for especially helpful moments rather than every interaction
- Best format: clean USD cash in named envelopes, with the biggest thank-yous given personally at the end of the stay
Dress Code
- Barefoot luxury — barefoot dining is encouraged at all restaurants
- Edge (overwater fine dining) is the one exception: sandals/footwear expected
- Subsix, Nest, Tribal, Epicure — casual resort wear, barefoot fine
- Epicure is the most family-friendly restaurant
- Pack smart-casual resort wear (linen shirts, shorts, sundresses) and you're covered everywhere
Seaplane Logistics
- Daylight only — operates ~6am to 5pm, no exceptions
- Baggage: 25kg total per person (20kg checked + 5kg hand), excess $5/kg
- Niyama reps meet you at Male arrivals and handle everything — escort to VIP lounge
- Expect 1-4 hours wait at the seaplane terminal — bring snacks and entertainment for kids
- Return seaplane time confirmed the evening before departure
- The planes are noisy — consider ear protection for the toddler
- Weather delays happen — the resort will rebook or arrange alternatives
Connectivity
- Complimentary WiFi in all villas and throughout the resort — fine for messaging, not great for video calls
- Get a Dhiraagu or Ooredoo eSIM at Male airport as backup — cheap and easy
- UK roaming in Maldives is typically outside standard bundles — check with your provider or use eSIM
- WhatsApp calls work on resort WiFi
Packing Essentials
- Reef shoes for the whole family — coral and shells in the lagoon, essential not optional
- Long-sleeve rashguards for all kids — UV + jellyfish/coral protection
- Reef-safe sunscreen SPF 50+ — you CANNOT buy sunscreen on the island. A family of 5 goes through ~1 bottle every 2 days
- Mosquito/sandfly repellent — DEET-based, apply at dusk. Sandflies can be worse than mosquitoes
- Wide-brim hats for everyone, especially kids
- Waterproof phone pouch for lagoon/snorkelling photos
- Light layers for air-conditioned restaurants and the seaplane
- Kids' armbands/floaties for the toddler around pools
- Basic medicines: Calpol/Nurofen, anti-diarrhoeal, rehydration sachets, antihistamines, plasters
Health & Safety
- On-site doctor and nurse 24 hours — consultation is complimentary
- Nearest hospital: Male (seaplane 40 min, daylight only)
- Travel insurance must cover medical evacuation by seaplane/air ambulance
- Equatorial UV index regularly hits 11-12+ — reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially on kids
- Tap water is NOT safe to drink — villas are stocked with complimentary bottled water daily
- Resort-made ice is fine (purified water). Use bottled water for the toddler's teeth-brushing
Kids at Niyama
- Explorers Kids' Club: ages 1-12, run by Scott Dunn. Complimentary for ages 3-12
- Four age groups: Globetrotters (1-3), Adventurers (3-5), Voyagers (5-8), Pioneers (8-12)
- Hours: 10am-6pm daily. Babysitting available outside hours (charged per hour)
- Club provides nappies, wipes, sunscreen, snacks, water — they apply sunscreen and repellent
- Sleeping room available for babies
- Children under 12 cannot stay in overwater villas (doesn't affect you — Beach Villa)
Cultural Etiquette
- Maldives is a Muslim country — resort islands operate under relaxed rules but good to know
- On the resort: alcohol, swimwear, casual dress all fine — no restrictions
- If visiting a local island: cover shoulders and knees, no alcohol (illegal outside resorts), no bikinis except designated beaches
- Do NOT pack alcohol in luggage — customs will confiscate it. Only available on resort islands
- Male airport: dress modestly out of respect (not legally required but appreciated)
- Seaplanes don't fly after dark — if your Male arrival is delayed past ~3pm, you'll overnight and take the first morning seaplane
- Book the snorkelling excursion early in the trip — if weather cancels, you can rebook
- Ask for a villa near the house reef entry point — worth requesting at check-in
- Subsix underwater restaurant books up fast — reserve on arrival day
- The kids' club does dinner supervision some evenings — ask on arrival for the current schedule
